She didn’t know where to go from there. It was silent again, and once again she found herself wanting to escape. She fought the urge, but after a few more moments she found herself edging toward the door. “Anyway… I’m sorry to bother you for that. But thanks for letting me… talk.”
He watched her edge to the door, and couldn’t help by sigh again. The blond SeeD nodded again in understanding that she needed to leave, that the moment was just awkward. “Yeah… anytime…” He fell back in his desk chair, allowing the back of it to support his weight.
She stood there, just staring, her eyebrows drawn up in worry and sadness and nerves and every other horrible emotion that could fit in her small frame. She wanted to say something, to fix this. He was really upset, even if he was trying not show it, and her worst nightmare was her friends being mad at her. It had to be this way, for now at least, but… why did it have to suck so much? There was nothing she could say to make this better, so she opted for silence. “See you tomorrow, Zell,” she uttered as she left the room, lingering just long enough for a possible response, then shutting the door behind her, blinking away tears that threatened to brim at the corners of her eyes.
“Yeah, see you.” He said quietly. Once the door was shut, he picked up his pencil once again. Why was he feeling this bad about it? It wasn’t that bad, plus it was her decision. Nothing to do about that. He felt another sigh coming on, but swallowed it and began to tap the pencil on the piece of paper. He couldn’t think straight. It just all seemed to… confusing. Finally letting loose the sigh, he threw the pencil on the desk and flopped in his bed. He needed some rest, that was certain.
His relentless assault surprised the colonel. Though still a child, his fighting capabilities were on par with trained PSICOM soldiers. Backstepping, she tripped over the leg he swung around behind her and gritted her teeth as she fell. Immediately acting on the oppurunity her opponent flung himself into the air in hopes of landing an elbow down upon her with full force. Without thought she immediately brought the baton out across her chest, supporting it with her other hand hoping to catch him before the attack landed.
The hard elbow blow still successfully landed, let alone the Baton. But it was weakened dramatically. The brawler back-flipped back to his starting ground, then stood up straight. “So, do I still seem like a amateur?” He asked her in a slightly cocky tone. His SeeD honor was hurt, so now he hoped he got it back.
“Your quick temper is quite reckless.” Jihl spat as she stood to her feet, brushing off her uniform. Tapping the weapon against her palm several times before extending it outward towards the boy’s face. ”You fight like a trained soldier yet your attitude screams out that you’re still just a boy who wishes his voice to be heard.” Jihl returned the weapon to its hiding place and adjusted her glasses before continuing her scrutinizing. ”You should learn some manners while you’re at it.”
“Say what!?” He started to shake with anger. He hadn’t released it all in the quick spar, but now he couldn’t hold it in anymore. “You’re just a crybaby who can’t admit defeat when she needs to!” He spat. “You’re weak! Pathetic! All bark, no bite if you ask me!” He punched a nearby wall to show his anger. Causing a couple of bricks to crack, and a few pieces to fall off. He heaved in a breath. His anger was released, and now his rage was calming down.

She could feel his distance, his detached - almost formal - manner in dealing with this. He wasn’t really fine with it, she was sure; he was keeping himself away from it. Because he didn’t want her to see how he really felt. Because he wanted to make her happy, make her believe that it was all okay, it was all going to be okay. And she loved him all the more for that. The corners of her mouth lifted in a smile, and that was all she could give him then; hugging felt wrong, handshaking was weird. So she just met his eyes, the same sadness reflected between them, and nodded back. “Okay. Thank you, Zell… thank you so much. I’m so happy I have you as a friend.”
Beyond his smile, he was mourning inside. Maybe just a little, but still. He looked up into her eyes, and starred. The brawler let out a small sigh, but still had a understanding look on his face. “Yeah, me too.” He responded. Happy wasn’t the word… but nothing else could quite fit it.

The silence was horrific, but his answer nearly knocked her off her feet. She whipped around to face him and he was… smiling? “Wait… you do? I haven’t even told you anything yet! And you’re still okay with it? I mean, I’m not complaining, I’m just… I’m confused.” She saw the slight sadness beyond his grin, and her brow knit together. “Zell… I know it’s cliche but it’s not you. I just… I have a lot to work out on my own and… I just need friends for a while. I can’t tell the future or anything… But just now, can we keep being best friends?”
All he did was nod when she started to talk once again. He was still listening though. ”Selphie, I understand.” He said once again. He was being quite level headed. “And yeah. That sounds like a plan.” Another nod came after.

She couldn’t stand to be under his confused eyes, so she turned around. There, the illusion of privacy. “I know you and I have been… I don’t know, romantic? I mean, we’ve kissed and stuff lately and…” She ran a hand through her hair and took another breath. “I mean, it doesn’t have to stop - well yeah, actually, it does have to stop… But we can still hang out and stuff…” Her words were jumbled like her thoughts and she stomped her foot. “Ugh! I’m not good at this!”
He blinked once… twice… It was an awfully awkward silence. Nothing was being said between the two. Zell had been looking down the whole time… thinking. His head slowly lifted up. Something surprising had happened. He had a smile on his face. Beyond his happy face though, you could barely see a small twinkle of sadness in his eyes. It wasn’t drastic though. If anything it was the least to be expected. “Calm down Selph. I understand.” He said with a nod. A surprising answer, even for Zell.

His easy nature was more than a relief, and she even managed a smile. But it disappeared quickly. “Well… I kinda have a lot to say. And I haven’t been completely honest with you. Or at least, I haven’t been telling you things that you should know.” Ugh, she was being cryptic. She didn’t even know where to start!
He cocked his head slightly. What was she-? Better not to ask questions for now. Just let her talk. “That I should know…?” Damn, he just broke his own rule. He let out a sigh in his thoughts, then directed his attention back up to Selphie.

She shuffled her feet before walking into his room, looking around. Papers were strewn all over his desk and she grimaced. “Sorry - if you’re busy or anything I can come another time…” Her stomach was full of butterflies and she was looking for a way out. But she couldn’t let herself run, not from this one. This was important. “Actually, no I can’t. I just… can we talk, Zell?”
He blinked a couple of times, then lightly shrugged. “Uh, yeah. Sure. Procrastinating is what I’m good at.” He said with a warm hearted smile. “What’s up Selph? Something bothering ya?”
